Griffin Living Creates Communities Where Seniors Age with Dignity
We believe that some of the best years of seniors’ lives are ahead of them. So we are reimagining the way that senior housing is experienced.
When I first started looking into the senior housing business for Griffin Living, I’ve visited a number of facilities to evaluate senior housing standards and try to shoot higher and become a top assisted living community builder. I’ll never forget seeing an elderly man whose daughter was dropping him off after an outing together. He was angry. It seems to me he had every reason to be: he was healthy and had all his wits about him. But his assisted living home looked, smelled, and sounded like a hospital. The air was stale, the overhead lighting fluorescent, and the only sounds were of shuffling feet and medical machines. I thought, “I don’t blame him: There’s no way I’d want to be here in a couple decades.” On the other hand, what other choices are available to this man and his daughter?
At Griffin Living, we are creating alternatives for families that are based on the dignity of aging and honor of aging — we believe that some of the best years of seniors’ lives are ahead of them. So we are reimagining the way that senior housing is experienced. Consulting with DNATheatre, we are thinking through all aspects of what makes a space feel like a place to thrive. Using their background in creating immersive experiences for theater-goers, they are helping us create different natural and vibrant settings for residents for different seasons and times of day. We’re thinking about what our residents, their families, and staff see — stage lighting with hundreds of sources carefully synchronized to simulate the rising and setting sun, with every part of the day between. We’re thinking about what they smell — aromatherapy subtle enough to relax residents without overwhelming them. We’re thinking about what they hear — soundscapes with hundreds of speakers to remind them of summer nights or earlier mornings outdoors.
We look forward to creating innovative and welcoming experiences for seniors in our Griffin Living communities. To learn more about our current projects, visit griffinliving.com.
